“Do you know the House of Moses?”

The House of Moses is one of our two crisis shelters. The House of Moses is known throughout the city and country as a safe refuge for orphaned and abandoned children when they have nowhere else to go. In the past twenty years, over one thousand children have come to our crisis nurseries in need of help. We have welcomed hours-old abandoned babies; young mothers asking us to spare their children from starvation; and married couples ready to meet their adoptive child for the first time. Our response is unique to each child’s circumstance, and begins the moment they arrive at our door. But CACZ’s goal is the same for every child: whether through temporary shelter, reintegration, and alternative placement, we make sure they are protected and destined for family.

How we help orphaned and abandoned children:

TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE.

Our staff are trained to understand, recognize and respond to the effects of trauma upon orphaned and abandoned children in crisis care and follow-on case management.

EMERGENCY SHELTER.

Our crisis nurseries give orphaned and vulnerable children emotional and physical protection while we focus on identifying permanent, safe, and loving families for them.

FAMILY REINTEGRATION.

Whenever possible, we seek to reintegrate children with biological family. We create a customized plan to ensure a safe, healthy reintegration process with systemic support to prevent future disruption.

ALTERNATIVE PLACEMENT.

We recruit, assess, train and prepare permanent foster and adoptive families for children without available biological family. We offer continued support through post-placement visits and family networking opportunities.

Rosie and Abigail’s story: from orphans to beloved daughters.

Rosie and Abigail were brought to the House of Moses as babies by their terminally-ill mother. Immediately we provided the sisters with life-saving medical help, shelter, and round-the-clock care. Soon, the girls were approved for adoption and social workers began seeking the right family for them.

As orphans, these two sisters would typically face a lifetime of social exclusion. But when Bishop Mwiinga and his wife adopted them, they no longer were known by their stigmas. Instead, they became beloved daughters of a respected faith leader, fully embraced by their family and church.

Their father affirms the gift of his new daughters. “We have bonded and we are bound by the cords of God’s love which cannot be broken.” Today the girls are flourishing at home in the love and safety of their permanent family.
